Employee Provident Fund(EPF) is a great scheme by Indian government to enforce discipline of investing. As a salaried employee, you are undoubtedly familiar with this low-risk retirement scheme.
After all, a part of your monthly earnings (12% of your salary, DA, and regular allowances) is locked away before you spend it. Don’t you want to know EPF balance you saved so far. So, here is How to check your EPF balance online, SMS and missed call.
One of the benefits of being a modern workforce and in a tech-savvy world is the ease with which you can access information, anytime and anywhere.
Ask someone who has worked before the digitization of government departments about their experiences of checking their EPF accounts. It was a painful process for simple tasks.
Employees’ Provident Fund Organization handles retirement funds and details of over 3.5 crore employees, 6 lakh employers, and 40 lakh pensioners.
This is indeed a commendable task but also complicated. In an effort to boost transparency and efficiency, EPFO has created an online portal to help you access provident fund account, check balance, contributions, withdrawals, and other details.
This online approach is handy in many situations. If you have changed your job or have doubts about your employer fulfilling their part of the bargain (actually contributing their share as required by law), use the portal to check your details.
Earlier you were dependent on your HR team to answer your queries. Not anymore, as EPFO offers many useful options to its members. The online site is not the only way to find more about your EPF account.
It has created a mobile app and provides EPF balance inquiry through SMS and missed-call service.
From accessing your PF information on your mobile to using your Unique Account Number (UAN) and downloading your passbook, you have various means to keep track of your EPF contributions.

Leave the four text field blank, if you have no extension codes.
For eg: if your PF account is in this format, TN/56007/396, then enter 56007 in the employer (third) field, leave the fourth blank, and enter 396 (PF a/c number) in the last field.
- If you have entered incorrect details, you will see an invalid message on the same page.

You can also change mobile number on the portal at a later stage. By updating your mobile number, you can to continue using the SMS facility for checking PF balance.

Employer, current employees, and pensioners can use the Mobile App to see EPF balance and also activate your UAN.
As an employee, you have to activate your UAN first before you check PF account through the app.
Step1. The official app is only available at employees menu at EPFO website as a manual install and as authorized app (created by mgovt team) at Google play. Download it from either of place to your mobile and install it.

EPF Balance Check by Short Code SMS for PF a/c balance
The EPFO has been actively providing newer services to its subscribers and pensioners. After launching the UAN programme in 2014, it has created another beneficial service for members who have activated their UAN accounts.
You may wonder why you need this service when you get monthly SMS automatically after you’ve activated your UAN account.
This SMS facility helps you access PF balance at any time. Suppose you want to withdraw money to meet a medical emergency, you can check the current balance immediately on your mobile.
How should you use this SMS short code system to know PF balance and other KYC details?
Since you have already registered your mobile number with the e-sewa portal, you simply have to send an SMS in a specific format to a particular number. Once the EFPO server receives your enquiry SMS, it will pass on details of your account.
This process is very similar to the way you use SMS to check your bank account or mobile account details.
SMS Format — EPFOHO UAN LAN to be sent to 77382 99899 from your registered mobile number.
Remember to add a space after EPFOHO and UAN. Substitute LAN with first three letters of the language you prefer.
EPFO provides details in ten Indian languages including English. Language codes include:
English – ENG, Hindi – HIN
Bengali – BEN, Gujarati – GUJ
Marathi – MAR, Malayalam – MAL
Kannada – KAN, Punjabi – PUN
Tamil – TAM, Telugu – TEL
- Don’t make the mistake of adding your actual UAN in the SMS request. You will get a service error message. The EPFO system automatically recognises your mobile number and links it to the relevant PF account.
You will receive a SMS with Last Contribution and Total Contribution details along with your Name and Date of Birth.
If your employer has digitally added your Aadhar number, Bank account, PAN number and other Know Your Customer (KYC) details, you will receive information on these seeded accounts.
Unfortunately, this service is not free and you will have to pay SMS charges as per mobile plan.
EPF Balance Check – Missed Call Service
You may not want to go through the trouble of checking the EFPO website or the hassles of finding your UAN number (although this gives you greater control over your PF account and other benefits). You may have forgotten your UAN, have limited access to a computer, or are travelling on work.
Whatever be your reason, the missed call service is the simplest way to know your PF balance. All you have to do is give a missed call to a specific number. You will receive an instant SMS with information on your latest balance. What’s more, you don’t have to pay anything, as this is a toll-free service.
Give a missed call to 01122901406 and check your PF account balance 24×7.
Why you should regularly check EPF Balance
The PF account is a valuable retirement fund, and sometimes, the only big saving fund for many salaried employees.
You can use it after retirement, withdraw it when you have completed 10 years of service, transfer it on changing jobs, take a home loan against contributions, or withdraw partial amounts for specific purposes.
Not all employers are sincere in depositing their contribution. Sometimes they may forget to remit their share. There may be errors in your records.
In other cases, the company may shut down or merge with another business. It is essentially for these and other reasons to keep track of your PF balance and contributions.
If you have any queries regarding your PF account, contact the organization on their toll-free number 1800118005 from 9.15 AM to 5.45 PM on all seven days.
